Foot taping guide

Plantar Fasciitis Foot Taping

Daily foot taping is one of the three core elements of the NIHR-recommended 6-week treatment programme for plantar fasciitis. It works alongside daily stretching exercises and footwear education.

NIHR Evidence (2021)

Recommends taping as part of the core 6-week programme. It is not optional — all three elements (exercises, taping, footwear) are needed together for best results.

Why Does Taping Help Plantar Fasciitis?

01

Reduces Load

Physically supports the plantar fascia and reduces stretch at the heel attachment with every step.

02

Supports the Arch

Prevents excessive arch flattening (pronation), which is a major driver of fascia strain.

03

Reduces Pain

By reducing load and supporting the arch, taping allows more comfortable movement throughout the day.

Types of Tape Available in the UK

Most clinical

Rigid Sports Tape / Zinc Oxide Tape

Most commonly used for low-dye taping. Firm support that stays in place all day. Available from pharmacies, sports shops and online (approx. £3–8 per roll). Skin-prep spray or foam underwrap is recommended for sensitive skin.

Most comfortable

Kinesiology Tape (KT Tape)

More flexible and allows more natural movement — comfortable for all-day wear. Water-resistant, so it can be worn in the shower. More expensive than rigid tape. Popular UK brands include KT Tape, RockTape and Physio Room Kinesio Tape.

Low-Dye Taping: Step-by-Step Instructions

These instructions are for general guidance. An NHS physiotherapist or podiatrist can demonstrate the technique in person and ensure correct application for your specific foot type.

  1. 1

    Prepare Your Foot

Clean and dry the foot thoroughly and remove any nail polish. If you are using rigid tape, apply foam underwrap around the foot first to protect the skin.

  2. 2

    Apply the Anchor Strip

Tear a strip of tape long enough to wrap around the ball of the foot. Apply it across the ball from one side to the other. This is the anchor strip that all other strips will attach to.

  3. 3

    Apply Heel Strips

Tear two strips approximately 15–20cm long. Starting from the anchor on the outer edge of the foot, pull the tape firmly around the heel and attach to the anchor on the inner edge — applying slight tension to lift the arch. Apply the second strip slightly overlapping the first.

  4. 4

    Apply Top Anchor

Apply a final strip across the top of the previous strips, just above the heel, to secure everything in place.

  5. 5

    Check the Application

The tape should feel supportive but not tight or uncomfortable. You should be able to flex your ankle normally. Remove immediately if you feel tingling, numbness or the skin looks blue — the tape is too tight.

How Long to Wear the Tape

1

Apply fresh tape each morning.

2

Wear throughout the day.

3

Remove before showering or bathing.

4

Reapply daily for the full 6-week core programme.

Looking After Your Skin

Skin care essentials

  • Remove tape carefully — peel it back slowly, never quickly.
  • If you get skin irritation, take a day off taping, allow recovery, then restart.
  • A thin layer of foam underwrap under the tape protects sensitive skin.
  • Moisturise the foot each evening after removing the tape.

When Not to Use Foot Tape

Do not tape if any of these apply

  • Broken or damaged skin under the tape area.
  • Active skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis over the foot.
  • Poor circulation or peripheral vascular disease.
  • Diabetes with reduced sensation in the feet.
  • Tape allergy or severe skin sensitivity.

Important: Always speak to your GP or podiatrist if you have diabetes or circulation concerns before applying tape to your feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tight should the tape be?
Firm and supportive — but never restrictive. You should be able to flex your ankle and wiggle your toes normally. If you feel tingling, numbness or the skin looks pale or blue, remove the tape immediately and reapply with less tension.
Can I shower with the tape on?
Rigid sports tape should be removed before showering. Kinesiology tape is water-resistant and can be worn in the shower, but you should still allow the skin to fully dry afterwards. Most physios recommend taking tape off in the evening regardless.
How many rolls of tape will I need for 6 weeks?
For daily low-dye taping with rigid tape, plan on roughly 4–6 rolls (38mm) over the 6-week core programme. With kinesiology tape, one good-quality roll typically lasts 2–3 weeks of daily use.
Can I apply the tape myself or do I need help?
Most people can self-apply low-dye taping after a short practice — sit down with the foot resting on the opposite knee. If you have limited mobility, ask a partner to help, or ask your NHS physiotherapist or podiatrist to demonstrate the technique on you in person.
